What are RSS feeds?
RSS is a format for the distribution of content on the Web. The term RSS is the acronym of Really Simple Syndication (or Rich Site Summary) and is represented by an archive (expressed in XML) containing a list (so-called feeds) of titles, short summaries and links. Thanks to RSS feeds, you can always stay up to date on news published on a website.
By subscribing to an RSS feed, you receive a notification when a new content is published and can be viewed without having to access the page where it was posted. RSS feeds, in fact, allow those who use it, to search, find, read the latest news, information, news without using a classic browser (using a feed reader) browsing and without typing, from time to time time, individual web addresses and search for the latest news.
How to use RSS feeds?
To receive RSS feeds you need a feed aggregator, which is an application for reading feeds: a so-called “news reader” or “feed reader”. A software controls the RSS feeds selected by the user and reports when a new content is published.
Feed aggregators are divided into two main categories: web aggregators and software aggregators. The difference between the two possibilities is the same between the use of email via the web and the use of an email program installed on a PC.
Web aggregators in fact allow you to read in a single web page all the “articles” of the various feeds to which you are “subscribers”, do not require the installation of any software, but to use them you must be connected to the internet and use the own browser (eg Internet Explorer).
The software aggregators instead require the installation of a program on their PC, but once the feed updates are downloaded (as well as the e-mail is downloaded) then you can read the news even without an active internet connection.
It is also important to remember that many operating systems, but also devices such as PDAs and mobile phones, already offer the integrated possibility of using RSS feeds and will offer it more and more in the future.
Below are some examples of aggregators; there are actually many alternatives, those reported are the most widespread:
